What Shame are you Covering Up?
Shame convinces us that our mistakes define us, pushes us to hide behind busy lives or excuses, and makes us feel like we have to run from God instead of toward Him. But the good news is that God’s response has always been the same: He comes looking for us. Just like He asked Adam and Eve, “Where are you?”, God still pursues us today with grace, not condemnation. Real freedom begins when we stop hiding and bring our shame to the cross where Jesus already carried it for us.

HIGHLIGHTS:
- We’re wired to cover up our mistakes – From childhood to adulthood, our instinct is to hide what we’ve done wrong (Genesis 3:7–8).
- The first appearance of shame – Adam and Eve went from being “naked and unashamed” to suddenly hiding and covering themselves after sin entered the picture (Genesis 2:25; Genesis 3:7).
- Shame changes how we see ourselves – It steals our security and identity, convincing us that our failures define who we are instead of what God says about us (2 Corinthians 5:17).
- Shame pushes us to hide – Just like Adam and Eve sewing fig leaves together, we try to cover our struggles with busyness, noise, excuses, or religious activity instead of dealing with the root issue (Genesis 3:7–8).
- Shame breaks intimacy with God – What was once joy and closeness with God becomes fear and distance (Genesis 3:8–10).
- God still comes looking for us – When God asks “Where are you?” it’s not because He doesn’t know—it’s because He’s pursuing us (Genesis 3:9; John 6:37).
- The way out of shame – Throw off the weight and run toward Jesus, because He already carried our shame at the cross (Hebrews 12:1–3).
- Freedom is possible – When we confess and come to Christ, we are forgiven, restored, and no longer condemned (1 John 1:9; Romans 8:1).
TALK ABOUT IT:
- Why do you think our natural instinct is to hide or cover up our mistakes?
- What is the difference between guilt and shame, and why does it matter?
- Have you ever experienced a time when shame made you feel distant from God?
- What are some “fig leaves” people use today to cover their struggles?
- How does God’s question “Where are you?” reveal His heart toward people?
- Why is running toward Jesus the key to breaking the power of shame?
- Which truth from Scripture helps you most when you feel weighed down by shame?
- What would it look like for you personally to “throw off the weight” this week?
APPLY IT:
- Be honest about areas where shame is keeping you stuck.
- Stop trying to “cover up” struggles with busyness or distractions.
- Spend time in Scripture to remind yourself of what God says about you.
- Talk to God honestly about what you’re carrying instead of hiding it.
- Confess struggles and receive the forgiveness that God promises.
- Replace shame-based thoughts with truth from God’s Word.
- Remember that your identity is based on what Jesus has done, not your past.
- Practice bringing your struggles to God quickly instead of running away.
